What the job postings say
Of 150 postings on Job Bank in Greater Montreal (6 months, February to August 2026), 4% mention a night shift, 5% an evening shift and 5% weekends.
There is no single schedule for this group: the newspaper carrier, the meal delivery driver and the parts driver for a distributor do not deliver at the same time of day. The “What job postings say” block above gives, for each region, the share of postings that mention evenings, nights or weekends: it is the closest measure of what awaits you in Greater Montreal. One rule changes the daily routine as soon as the truck gets bigger. When the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight rating, its maximum load included, reaches 4,500 kg, the SAAQ classifies it as a heavy vehicle, even if it can be driven on a Class 5 licence. The pre-trip inspection must then have been done within the 24 hours before departure, and the rules on driving and rest hours apply. The SAAQ guide exempts from the electronic logging device a driver who stays within a 160 km radius of the home terminal and returns there every day: both conditions must be met.
What a delivery driver does
- Drive a car, a van or a light truck on a local delivery run, in the city and the suburbs.
- Plan the order of stops and the day’s route, or follow the one set by dispatch.
- Load the vehicle at the warehouse or store, then unload at each stop, often by hand or with a hand truck.
- Sort the goods to be delivered before leaving, when that sorting is not already done at the warehouse.
- Inspect the vehicle before and after the run; perform the pre-trip inspection the SAAQ requires when the truck is a heavy vehicle.
- Hand over the goods, get proof of delivery signed and serve the customer during a sale or a delivery.
- Record pickups, deliveries, mileage and fuel costs.
- Report a delay, an absent customer, a refused delivery or an accident to dispatch.
- Assemble or install the item delivered when the service includes it.
- Take back returns and bring them to the starting point at the end of the run.
Requirements, cards and certifications
- A driver’s licence of the class that matches the vehicle: Class 5 is enough for a car, a van or a 2-axle truck with a net mass under 4,500 kg.
- A SAAQ Class 3 licence if the truck has 3 or more axles, or 2 axles and a net mass of 4,500 kg or more.
- One year of safe driving experience, usually required according to the National Occupational Classification.
- A high school diploma, usually required according to the Québec.ca profile.
- A transportation of dangerous goods training certificate when the load contains them.
- Eligibility for bonding, which some employers require according to Statistics Canada.
- The ability to load and unload goods at every stop on the run.
Training
No specific training is required: the Québec.ca profile says so plainly, and the National Occupational Classification refers to on-the-job training. The only real prerequisite is the licence. For a car, a van or a 2-axle truck under 4,500 kg net mass, the Class 5 licence you already hold is enough. A heavier truck needs Class 3: the SAAQ asks for 2 years of experience as a Class 5 licence holder, probationary licence included, then a medical examination report with an eye exam before the knowledge test. For those who want to go further, the DEP Transport par camion, a Quebec vocational diploma, program 5291, 615 hours (Inforoute FPT), prepares for semi-trailer driving and the trucking trade. Two short courses may be added depending on the employer: the transportation of dangerous goods certificate when the load contains them, and forklift training under section 256.3 of the Règlement sur la santé et la sécurité du travail, Quebec’s workplace health and safety regulation, when you load with a lift truck at the warehouse yourself.
Career path
Delivery leads first to a heavier wheel: after 2 years on Class 5, Class 3 opens the straight truck, then Class 1 the semi-trailer, two jobs that Statistics Canada files under another code, NOC 73300. Others stay in delivery and move into dispatch (14404) or supervising delivery drivers (72024).
Frequently asked questions
How much does a delivery driver make in Quebec?
The table on this page shows it: the low, median and high hourly wage Job Bank publishes for Quebec, then for Montreal, Laval, Montérégie, Laurentides and Lanaudière, next to the pay offered in job postings. Read it with the note beside it: the same code groups parcel drivers, meal delivery drivers and driver salespersons.
What is the average pay for a delivery driver?
Job Bank does not publish an average but a median: half the people earn less, half earn more. The low end of the table generally matches the 10th percentile and the high end the 90th. Wages drawn from the Labour Force Survey include tips and commissions, which matters for meal delivery.
What is the minimum wage for a delivery driver in Quebec?
A salaried delivery driver is entitled to at least the general minimum wage rate set under the Act respecting labour standards. According to the CNESST, someone who works for a business that sells, delivers or serves meals to be eaten off the premises, and who usually receives tips, may be paid the lower rate for employees receiving tips, not counting the tips themselves.
How can I work as a delivery driver with my own car?
With a Class 5 licence, which covers cars and vans. Québec.ca notes that these drivers work for a business or on their own account, and the difference matters: the Act respecting labour standards and its minimum wage cover employees, not a person delivering on their own account. Both are counted under the same occupation code, 75201.
What can you drive with a Class 5 licence as a delivery driver?
Class 5 covers cars, vans and any 2-axle truck with a net mass under 4,500 kg, according to the SAAQ. A pickup or a van under that threshold therefore needs no other class. A truck with 3 axles, or with 2 axles and a net mass of 4,500 kg or more, requires Class 3.
Can a delivery truck driven on Class 5 still be a heavy vehicle?
Yes. The licence depends on net mass, but the SAAQ treats as a heavy vehicle any vehicle whose gross vehicle weight rating, maximum load included, reaches 4,500 kg. A van driven on Class 5 may therefore require the pre-trip inspection, compliance with driving and rest hours, and registration of the operator with the Commission des transports du Québec.
What is the NOC code for a delivery driver?
It is 75201 in the National Occupational Classification: delivery service drivers and door-to-door distributors. Heavy truck drivers are not part of it; they fall under 73300. Couriers and messengers are under 74102 and delivery truck helpers under 75211, each with its own wage series.
Can you become a delivery driver with no experience?
With no experience in the trade, yes: Statistics Canada notes that training is given on the job, and Québec.ca requires no specific training. Road experience does count: one year of safe driving is usually required. A licence of the class that matches the vehicle remains the only fixed prerequisite.
Is a pharmacy delivery driver the same occupation?
Yes, for classification purposes. Québec.ca lists pharmacies among the typical employers of delivery drivers, along with dairies, newspaper distributors, fast-food outlets and dry cleaners. A pharmacy delivery driver is therefore counted under the same code, 75201, and in the same wage table as a parcel driver.
Can a Class 5 delivery driver deliver into the United States?
Yes, with one condition if the vehicle is heavy. According to the SAAQ, a driver holding only Class 5 who drives a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 kg or more in the United States for work must undergo more frequent medical exams. Two options: get Class 3, which the Americans recognize, or a certificate from a physician accredited by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
What is a delivery driver called in Quebec French?
A « chauffeur-livreur », or « livreur » for short. The French title of the National Occupational Classification group is « chauffeurs-livreurs/chauffeuses-livreuses de services de livraison et distributeurs/distributrices porte-à-porte ». Couriers and messengers are classified separately by Statistics Canada, under 74102: their wages are not in the table on this page.
