A posting for an industrial mechanic also draws construction millwrights: same DEP, same NOC code, but a different pay reference and a different work pattern. Eight interview questions

  1. Describe the last recurring breakdown you fixed for good: what was the real cause?
  2. How do you align a motor and a pump, and what tolerance do you aim for?
  3. A bearing runs hot a week after you replaced it: which causes do you check, and in what order?
  4. How do you lock out a machine powered by electricity, compressed air and hydraulics at the same time?
  5. Tell me about a part you made or welded yourself because it was not in stock.
  6. Have you worked on construction sites or in plants, and what changes for you from one to the other?
  7. Which preventive maintenance tasks were dropped or added because of your observations?
  8. Which shift would you turn down, and how do you handle on-call duty?

Timelines and difficulties

The first trap is the title. NOC 72400 groups the construction millwright and the plant industrial mechanic, and both often come out of the same DEP: an open posting draws construction candidates whose pay reference is the construction industry’s collective agreements. Say up front that this is a permanent plant position, and name the shift and the on-call duty. The second comes from the trade itself: outside construction it is not regulated in Quebec, and no card screens candidates for you. Test alignment, troubleshooting and drawing reading at the interview. Job Bank rates the outlook Moderate in every Greater Montreal region: candidates exist, but a mechanic already in a job compares your offer with a job they know and has to give notice. Finally, set your range from your region’s median on the pay page, not from a construction-site rate. Name the equipment in the posting as well: a mechanic reads the machine list to see whether they already know the work, and a vague posting gets vague applications.
