Eight interview questions

  1. Which certificate do you hold, when is it up for renewal, and where did you log your apprenticeship hours?
  2. Walk me through the last control fault you tracked down: which readings did you take, and in what order?
  3. A three-phase motor trips its protection at start-up: what do you check before running it again?
  4. How do you confirm a panel is de-energised before working on it?
  5. What have you modified in an installation, and how did you check the change met the Code?
  6. Which PLCs or programmable relays have you troubleshot, and how far into the program do you go?
  7. Have you mentored an apprentice? What do you sign off, and what do you refuse to sign off?
  8. Which maintenance schedule have you worked, and what made you leave your last job?

Timelines and difficulties

The certificate sets the pool. Only certified people, or apprentices supervised by a journeyperson, may work on the installation: an apprentice does not replace an electrician if nobody on the team holds the certificate. Job Bank rates the occupation's prospects Moderate in Montreal, Laval, Montérégie and the Laurentides, and Limited in Lanaudière. Two checks prevent a false start. First the certificate, valid and current, since it is renewed every four years. Then the job title: an electromechanical technician without the electricity certificate cannot modify your installation, and a posting that blends the two titles does not say which one is required. Finally, a CCQ journeyperson electrician receives the certificate for work outside construction with no further requirements: that pool is worth considering, provided the posting clearly describes plant work. If you plan to train an apprentice, settle in advance who will supervise their hours and sign off their skills: without a certified journeyperson on the team, the apprenticeship does not move forward, and the apprentice cannot work on the installation alone. The other way around, a candidate who has already worked in electricity can shorten the path: the ministry assesses their hours of experience from a work attestation, and can shorten their apprenticeship accordingly.
