What the job postings say
Of 17 postings on Job Bank in Greater Montreal (6 months, February to August 2026), 6% mention a night shift, 41% an evening shift and 29% weekends.
Job Bank puts the work week for this occupation at 35 to 40 hours. The shift itself depends on the plant. When a plant runs more than one shift, each shift needs someone who answers for the line, and the evening or weekend supervisor inherits whatever the previous shift left behind: a late order, a changeover half done, an absence to cover. The “What the job postings say” block above shows, for this group, the share of Greater Montreal postings that mention an evening, night or weekend shift: read it before applying for a day job. Also count the handover overlap at the start and end of the shift, and the time spent writing reports, on top of the posted hours.
What a production supervisor does
- Plan the shift and assign assemblers, inspectors and operators to the stations on the line
- Set work methods that keep production on schedule, and co-ordinate with shipping, maintenance and planning
- Track the shift's output — units produced, rejects, downtime — and explain the gaps against the plan
- Solve problems on the line and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
- Train new hires in the job, the safety rules and company policies, then check that they apply them
- Enforce lockout before any unjamming, cleaning or adjustment inside a machine's danger zone
- Requisition the materials and supplies the line needs for the next shift
- Set up machines and equipment when needed, especially at a product changeover
- Write production and incident reports, and hand over to the next shift's supervisor
- Recommend personnel actions such as hiring and promotions
Requirements, cards and certifications
- Several years of experience as an assembler or inspector, usually in the same company: that is the entry requirement the National Occupational Classification gives for group 92024
- A high school diploma, which the same classification says “may be required”
- Working knowledge of lockout and the other energy control methods that the Règlement sur la santé et la sécurité du travail, Quebec's workplace health and safety regulation, requires before any work in a machine's danger zone, at sections 196 to 199
- Ability to train on the floor: section 51 of the Loi sur la santé et la sécurité du travail requires the employer to give workers appropriate training, practice and supervision
- WHMIS training (SIMDUT in Quebec) as soon as the crew uses or stores hazardous products
- Writing production and incident reports, which the classification lists among the group's duties
- Setting up the line's machines and equipment, a duty the classification also assigns to the supervisor
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing (production à valeur ajoutée, or PVA), which the quebec.ca profile lists as sometimes required or considered an asset
Training
The National Occupational Classification ties no specific diploma to group 92024: completion of secondary school “may be required”, and it is several years of experience as an assembler or inspector, in the same company, that usually opens the job. The quebec.ca profile for the occupation names two college programs, both described by Inforoute FPT, Quebec's vocational and technical training directory. The DEC Technologie du génie industriel (235.B0), an industrial engineering technology diploma, runs 2,595 hours over about three years; locally it is offered at Collège Ahuntsic in Montreal and Collège Lionel-Groulx in Sainte-Thérèse. The DEC Technologie du génie des matériaux composites (241.C0), in composite materials engineering technology, runs 2,715 hours at the Cégep de Saint-Jérôme. The same quebec.ca profile adds that membership in the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec and knowledge of lean manufacturing are sometimes required or considered an asset. The rest is learned in the plant: each machine's lockout procedure, WHMIS, the product's methods and quality standards.
Career path
The National Occupational Classification warns that there is little mobility between the different types of supervisors in this group: experience on a door and sash line does not carry over as is to toys or jewellery. The next step therefore usually happens in the same plant, toward production or plant management. That level belongs to another group, NOC 90010, “Manufacturing managers”, which calls for five to ten years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing setting and usually a college or university program in engineering or business administration.
Frequently asked questions
What does a production supervisor do?
A production supervisor supervises, co-ordinates and schedules the work of the people who fabricate, assemble and inspect a plant's products. They set the methods that keep work on schedule, solve problems on the line, train workers in their duties and safety procedures, and prepare production reports. That is how the National Occupational Classification defines group 92024.
How much does a production supervisor make?
The table above gives the low end, the median and the high end, drawn from Job Bank data for NOC 92024. Read each regional row on its own: when Job Bank has no data of its own for a region, the table flags it and shows the Quebec figures there. Keep in mind that these figures cover other products manufacturing only.
What is the production supervisor salary in Quebec?
The Quebec row of the table above gives it, but for a narrower scope than the title suggests. NOC 92024 only covers the manufacturing and assembly of other products: toys, jewellery, sporting goods, millwork, prefab houses. A supervisor in a food or pharmaceutical plant falls under another code, with its own wage scale. The note under the table spells out the split.
What are the main duties of a supervisor in a plant?
In a plant, the supervisor assigns the crew to stations, tracks output and rejects, requisitions materials, trains new hires and writes the shift reports. The classification adds two duties that often get overlooked: recommending personnel actions such as hiring and promotions, and setting up machines and equipment when needed.
What training do you need to become a production supervisor?
No specific diploma is required. The National Occupational Classification says a high school diploma may be required and that several years of experience as an assembler or inspector, in the same company, usually are. The quebec.ca profile names two DECs: Technologie du génie industriel (235.B0), offered at Collège Ahuntsic and Collège Lionel-Groulx, and Technologie du génie des matériaux composites (241.C0).
Is a pharmaceutical production supervisor included in this table?
No. The classification files the pharmaceuticals production supervisor under NOC 92011, “Supervisors, petroleum, gas and chemical processing and utilities”. The table on this page covers 92024, so it does not measure that role: for a pharmaceutical supervisor, look up the 92011 profile on Job Bank instead.
Is a food production supervisor included in this table?
No. That role belongs to NOC 92012, “Supervisors, food and beverage processing”. The classification files the bakery, cannery and bottling foreman there, and even the hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) coordinator. None of them are counted in the table on this page, which covers other products manufacturing.
Do production supervisors work evenings or weekends?
As soon as a plant runs more than one shift, yes: each shift needs someone who answers for the line. The “What the job postings say” block above gives the share of this group's Greater Montreal postings that mention an evening, night or weekend shift. Job Bank puts the work week for the occupation at 35 to 40 hours.
What is the job outlook for production supervisors?
Job Bank rates it Limited for NOC 92024 in Quebec, and Limited in Montreal, Laval, the Montérégie and the Laurentides; it is Undetermined in Lanaudière. It cites a projected decline in employment that should eliminate some positions, retirements that will open others, and several experienced workers already looking for work in this occupation.
What is the difference between a production supervisor and a production planner?
The supervisor leads people on the floor during a shift; the planner decides the production sequence. The classification puts them in two separate groups: 92024 for the other products supervisor, 14402 for production logistics workers. The planner allocates jobs and materials and tracks supplies; the supervisor makes it come off the line with the crew on hand that day.
Is a production supervisor responsible for lockout?
They have to enforce it. The Règlement sur la santé et la sécurité du travail requires lockout, or a method that ensures equivalent safety, before any work in a machine's danger zone, unjamming, cleaning and adjustment included (section 196), and each person with access to that zone applies their own lock (section 197). Section 51 of the Loi sur la santé et la sécurité du travail also requires the employer to provide appropriate supervision.
How do you say production supervisor in French?
« Superviseur de production », or « superviseure de production ». The National Occupational Classification titles group 92024 « Surveillants/surveillantes dans la fabrication et le montage de produits divers ». In French, « contremaître » means the same level: it is the term the classification uses for most of the group's examples, such as the bicycle or toy assembly foreman.
