Hiring by occupation

Hire a production welder in Greater Montreal

A welder posting brings back very different profiles: construction welders, robot operators, one-off job shop welders. NOC 72106 puts them all under one code. This page gives you a production welder job description to copy, the requirements that actually filter, and eight questions to check print reading, process and fit-up.

  • Set up the welding station: voltage, current, wire feed speed and gas flow.
  • Weld to the processes and positions set out in the procedure (GMAW, FCAW, SMAW or GTAW).
  • Follow a welding sequence that limits distortion, and straighten parts when needed.
  • Check welds and parts visually and dimensionally, and repair defects by gouging or grinding.
  • Carry out basic maintenance on the station and follow the shop’s SIMDUT rules.
  • Cut parts with a cutting torch, and bevel or gouge to prepare or repair a weld.

  • Reading prints and welding symbols.
  • Command of the process and positions your welding procedures call for.

  • Confirmed availability for the shift posted.
  • Tolerance for heat, noise, fumes and radiation, the hazards Quebec names for this trade.

Assets

  • Assembleur-soudeur qualification certificate issued by Emploi-Québec.
  • Red Seal endorsement, useful if you run sites outside Quebec.
  • Experience building welding jigs.
  • Experience setting up or monitoring a robotic welding cell.

Eight interview questions

  1. Read this welding symbol: what type of weld, on which side of the joint, and what size?
  2. This part is likely to distort. In what order do you weld the joints, and why?
  3. Which processes and positions did you weld every day in your last job, and on what thicknesses?
  4. Have you ever designed or built a jig? Describe it and tell me what it controlled.
  5. Your CWB qualification: which process, which position, which classification, and for which certified company?
  6. Your weld comes out porous. What do you check first on the station and on the gas?
  7. How do you make sure the assembly matches the print before you run the final weld?
  8. Which shifts are you available for, and do you come from series production, one-off work or construction?

Timelines and difficulties

The problem is not always the number of candidates: Job Bank rates the outlook Limited in Montréal and notes that experienced workers are already looking for jobs. The hard part is sorting. NOC 72106 puts the construction welder, the robot operator and the welder-assembler under one code, and all of them write welder on a résumé. Outside pressure work, the trade is not regulated in plants, so no card sorts candidates for you. A candidate’s CWB qualification is only valid with the certified company that qualified them: build the test on your own procedures into your hiring timeline. If you build pressure equipment, the Régie du bâtiment du Québec also requires a company qualification and a personal qualification for each welder, issued by Emploi-Québec: check it before the interview. Résumés also carry two DEP names, Soudage-montage and Soudage-assemblage: the former program and the one that replaced it. Name the processes, positions, thicknesses and share of fit-up in the posting: that is what makes the right people answer.
